Basketball is a fun game that is loved by both young and adult. It is a game that requires a player not to just excel in shooting, jumping, dribbling, but also in passing. This is because passing the ball around allows the team to setup a play where they can create advantageous shooting positions and opportunities. The problem with passing is that it involves two players – the passer and the receiver, which means they need to communicate whether verbally or silently through signals and eye contacts to know each other’s move and anticipate them.
Ball passing can be used either offensively or defensively which is why they are essential skills for every basketball player. Below is a list of the types of basketball passes:
Chest Pass – this pass is accomplished by holding and raising the ball to chest level with both hands and extending them forward forcefully to create a high velocity pass that goes in a straight line parallel to the floor.
Bounce Pass – this pass is accomplished by bouncing the ball off the floor at an angle and speed towards a receiver. This type of pass is useful when the ball handler is being defended by two or more players.
Overhead Pass – this pass is accomplished with both hands held on their respective side of the ball. The pass is made by lifting and placing the ball behind the head and extending the elbows to generate the energy for the pass.
Behind-the-Back Pass – this pass is accomplished by cupping the ball with both the wrist and fingers which is then swung at the back towards the receiver. Passes like these are done to elude defenders.
In order to excel in passing, you need to be able to communicate well with your teammates, whether verbally or by sign languages, feel, and eye contacts. A well made pass to an open teammate can even be credited as a basketball assist to the player who passed the ball.
